Selimiye Mosque is the most important and, at the same time, the most famous historical monument of Edirne - a city located in the European part of Turkey. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by renowned architect Mimar Sinan between 1569 and 1575. Selimiye Mosque is considered to be Sinan's finest piece of work. The whole complex was inscribed in 2011 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, in recognition of architectural values and harmonious connection of its elements.
